Visa Joins MasterCard, AmEx to Begin Categorizing Sales at Gun Shops

Visa says it will follow in Mastercard and American Express' footsteps and begin categorizing sales made at gun shops.

The payment processors had announced similar plans to create a new merchant code for gun store sales, which were originally labeled as "general merchandise".

The idea is that the change would make it easier to track suspicious quantities of firearm sales that could potentially lead to a mass shooting.

An example given in support of the code is the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting in 2016. The gunman in that shooting purchased over $26,000 in guns and ammo with credit cards.

However, guns rights advocates say making this categorization is unfair because most firearm purchases don't lead to mass shootings.

National Rifle Association spokesman Lars Dalseide says:

“The [industry’s] decision to create a firearm-specific code is nothing more than a capitulation to anti-gun politicians and activists bent on eroding the rights of law-abiding Americans one transaction at a time.”
