Off-Duty Deputy Killed In Crash

An off-duty Washington County Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash Wednesday.

Deputy Rich Thompson was riding a scooter home from work when he was involved in a crash with a car on Baseline Road at Southwest 201st Avenue. He died at the scene.

Thompson joined the Sheriff's Office in 2001 and was certified as a Corrections Deputy. . During his career, Thompson worked as a Field Training Officer. He also served as an adult in custody (AIC) coordinator, assisted in the Work in Lieu of Jail program, and had been assigned to the Court Security unit since 2023. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Ribbon in 2018.

Thompson is survived by his wife and two children. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping, kayaking, paddle boarding and spending time with his family.

He used his coaching and mentoring skills outside of the office to teach archery to kids.

The Washington County Interagency Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to the location and is conducting the investigation, led by the Forest Grove Police Department.
