Kitten Season Brings Changes To Oregon Humane Society

Oregon Humane Society’s Portland Campus is adjusting its adoption process to walk-in only. The goal is to help more pets find homes faster, particularly as kitten season begins to peak. The change creates a similar adoption experience at OHS’ Portland and Salem campuses.

OHS is also hosting kitten adoption events every weekend in Portland and Salem thanks to a partnership with Petco. The full schedule of events can be found on the OHS website.

“We are responding to a huge need to help cats and kittens in our local community and throughout the state,” says Chase Patterson, OHS Vice President of Operations. “Our Second Chance team is on the road several times a week assisting as much as we can. As kitten season begins to peak, our goal is to find new ways to help cats and kittens find homes faster.”

OHS’ Portland and Salem campuses currently have more than 850 cats and kittens in care—including more than 300 tiny kittens in foster care and not yet ready for adoption.

“Every time an adopter opens their heart and home to a cat or kitten, it frees up space for us to help another pet in need,” adds Chase. “We all have the opportunity to make a difference for shelter cats and kittens this summer.”

The walk-in adoption process is also designed to encourage the in-person connection with pets and reduce barriers for those who are not comfortable using online tools. Each client will still receive the same level of service and guidance as the previous appointment-based model. Appointments are still required for pets who are in foster care or part of the Behavior Modification Program.
