Beacon Rock Rescue

Firefighters spent five hours on Thursday rescuing a fallen climber in the Columbia River Gorge.

Two rock climbers were using ropes two ascend Beacon Rock when one of them fell 200 feet onto a ledge.

Technical rescue firefighters used a complex rope system to reach the person and bring them to the ground. The climber suffered a serious hip injury.

The person was brought down in a basket and transported to a hospital.

The last firefighter got down just as it was becoming dark. The firefighters say it was extremely difficult, and a once-in-a-career rescue.
