Portland residents can set out extra bags and bundles of branches and other yard waste this coming week, to make up for missed compost collection over the past two weeks.
During the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 2, customers who have not had compost picked up in two weeks can set out three times as much compost for no extra charge.
How to set out extra yard waste
If you’ve got more yard waste than can fit in your curbside compost bin, here’s how to set out extras:
- Fill a yard waste bag* and roll the top shut (32 gallons and 45 pounds max each).
- Fill a can or container with yard waste (32 gallons and 45 pounds max each).
- Bundle branches together and tie securely with string or twine (do not use wire).
Branches must be shorter than three feet and no thicker than four inches.
Set bags, cans, or bundles next to your green compost bin.
*Keep filled yard waste bags in a dry place until pickup day to avoid the bottom of the bag getting wet and breaking open.
How to dispose of large branches, trees, and stumps
If you have branches or tree sections that are longer than three feet or thicker than four inches, here are disposal options:
Contact your garbage and recycling company to get a cost estimate for a bulky waste pickup.
Contact a Tree Care Provider for removal cost estimates.
Or find pick-up and drop-off options by using Metro's Find A Recycler and searching for "branches" or "stumps." You can also submit a question at oregonmetro.gov/AskMetro or call 503-234-3000 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to speak with someone in English or Spanish.
Garbage and recycling collection is caught up and the City thanks Portlanders for their patience
Over the past week, Portland's garbage and recycling companies have caught up on all the garbage and recycling they were unable to pick up the previous week.
This month’s snow and ice caused a nearly unprecedented disruption in Portland’s waste collection system. Neighborhood roads remained unsafe even as main roads cleared, key facilities in the regional waste system closed or had limited hours, and just when it looked like companies could start catching up over the weekend, freezing rain made roads unsafe again.
The City of Portland appreciates Portlanders' patience as garbage companies have worked hard to catch up after the storm.
