Suspect Starts Grass Fire In Detroit

Residents of Detroit are still recovering from the 2020 wildfire that destroyed much of the town, so when a woman set a grass fire they set out to find her.

On Monday, July 3, at about 6:11 p.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a female subject who had started a fire near Britenbush Rd and Front St in the community of Detroit. Deputy Larned arrived within a couple minutes of the call and was able to locate the person responsible, after an extensive search for her, due to the great community involvement. She was ultimately taken into custody without any further incident. She was identified as 40-year-old Terri Heath, from Ohio. Heath was taken to the Marion County Jail where she was lodged on criminal charges of arson in the second degree and escape.

The Detroit-Idanha Fire Department responded and was able to get the fire contained and ultimately extinguished, which had a lot to do with the community helping to put water on the fire until the fire department arrived. There were no injuries because of the fire or loss of property.

Deputy Larned is asking for the communities help and to contact him if you took video or any pictures of Heath as she was setting the grass on fire or if you just witnessed this crime. Deputy Larned can be reached at clarned@co.marion.or.us .
