Driver Charged In Fatal I-5 Crash

The driver of a semi that crashed into a van on I-5 near the Santiam Rest Area north of Millersburg killing seven people is charged with driving under the influence.

Oregon State Police say the driver of the commercial truck drove onto the shoulder and hit a van with 11 people inside.

The van was pushed into another semi parked on the side of the freeway.

Six adults died at the scene. One person died after being flown to a hospital on Life Flight. Four other people in the van were hospitalized.

The driver of the truck, 52-year-old Lincoln Smith from North Highlands, California, was arrested for DUI, reckless driving and seven counts of manslaughter in the second degree.
