Just before 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, Gresham police responded to the Extended Stay America Suites (formerly the WoodSpring Suites), located at 3013 NE 181stAvenue. It was reported to police that room 207 had bullet holes in the door that appeared to come from inside of the room and go out through the door.

Once officers arrived at the hotel, they heard gunshots coming from a second-floor room, and officers began an evacuation plan for occupants of the second floor. Officers went upstairs, and a short time later, 34-year-old Joseph Carrillo, of Gresham, came out of the motel room into the hallway, armed with a handgun, and pointed it at police. One Gresham officer fired their weapon and Carrillo fell to the ground. Carrillo was quickly taken into custody and checked for injuries. It was determined Carrillo was not injured by gunfire. As a precaution, Carrillo was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene.

Members of the East County Major Crimes Team (MCT) responded and are actively investigating the incident. The involved officers have been placed on Critical Incident Leave, according to department policy.

At this time, the investigation shows that Carrillo fired multiple rounds from inside his motel room, through the motel door, and into a neighboring unit. The neighboring unit was unoccupied at the time of the shooting, and nobody was injured. The firearm Carrillo was holding when contacted by officers was loaded.

Joseph Carrillo was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on the following charges:

Unlawful Use of a Weapon x 2

Criminal Mischief I

Reckless Endangering

Menacing
