Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty announced the launch of Rethink Portland, her vision and call for action to rethink community safety.
Rethink Portland is the Commissioner’s plan to move Portland forward in a moment demanding systems change. The vision is based on the tens of thousands of constituent emails sent, hundreds of public testimonies, hours of community organization meetings, and the Commissioner’s decades of police reform experience.
“We are long overdue for a reimagining of community safety created for and by our communities,” says Commissioner Hardesty. She continues, “Our current system has not worked for decades; Rethink Portland is an opportunity to take those decades of lessons learned and community demands to move forward in this critical moment.”
Rethink Portland offers a space for Portlanders to directly share their thoughts on community safety with Commissioner Hardesty to share with her colleagues. It also provides a schedule of events hosted by the Commissioner, the City, and the community, and a guide for Portlanders to take action.
The commissioner would like to thank Wieden+Kennedy who helped with creative work to bring Rethink Portland to life.
