Parents Now Regret Naming Their Children After 'Game Of Thrones' Character

As the series winds down to Sunday night's finale, it is clear that Game of Thrones has become a pop culture phenomenon. And while the hit HBO show is coming to a close, it will live on in the many people who were named after characters from it. According to the Social Security Administration, 2,545 babies born last year were named Arya, making it the 119th most popular name in the US. There were also 560 baby girls who were named Khaleesi in 2018, and after seeing "The Bells," the latest episode of Game of Thrones, those girls' parents might be having second thoughts (SPOILERS AHEAD).

The parents likely named their daughters after "Khaleesi" because "Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons" was a little too long, but also because up until Sunday, the character was ambitious and strong and kind and independent - all amazing qualities.

However, in "The Bells," she loses it and uses her dragon to set fire to all of King's Landing, killing tens of thousands of innocent citizens and, in doing so, ruining her reputation as a good person and likely upsetting a lot of parents of Khaleesis.

Jasmine Estrada has a six-year-old she named Khaleesi. The mother spoke to the Daily Beast about how she is feeling now. She stated, "I'm kind of in shock. It was kind of disappointing that her power trip took over. That was not cool." As for if she regrets her name choice, Jasmine revealed she stands by the decision but says the name is now "bittersweet." She added that she "didn't like the outcome of what [Khaleesi] represents."

The 560 parents of other Khaleesis born last year, as well as the moms and dads of the 19 Caleesis and five Khaleesies, are probably feeling the same way about now.
