Travelers should plan ahead for two major overnight freeway closures in the Portland area starting this weekend.
Northbound Interstate 205 will be closed overnight on Friday, July 10, at the Abernethy Bridge, and both directions of Interstate 5 will be closed overnight on Saturday July 11 through the Rose Quarter.
Next week, regular bridge inspections will close I-5 in one direction each night Monday through Thursday nights.
Only one interstate will be closed each night. The closures will not overlap. Expect delays, allow extra travel time, and follow signed detours.
Overnight closure schedule
- Friday: Northbound I-205 at Abernethy Bridge, 11 p.m. to Saturday morning.
- Saturday: Both directions of I-5 in the Rose Quarter, 10 p.m. to about noon Sunday.

Northbound I-205 closure night of July 10
Northbound I-205 will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday to Saturday morning for concrete pouring on the Abernethy Bridge between Oregon City and West Linn.
The on-ramp from OR 43 to northbound I-205 also will be closed.
Southbound I-205 will remain open.
Detours:
- Northbound traffic will bypass I-205 in this section by using detours on I-5 and I-84.
- Local traffic can use the Arch Bridge to cross the river.
- Southbound I-205 lanes will remain open.
Concrete pouring on the bridge will require up to seven more overnight closures into August. The next closures are scheduled for the nights of Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, also on the northbound side of the bridge. Schedules can change due to weather and other factors.

- I-5 northbound closed beginning at Exit 300 to I-84.
Remaining open:

- The ramp from Broadway to I-5 northbound will stay open. All lanes of I-5 northbound will be open beyond this point.
- Drivers on I-84 westbound will be directed to I-5 southbound. All southbound lanes of I-5 will remain open beyond that point.

Interstate Bridge I-5 overnight closures July 13-16
Regular inspections and maintenance of the Interstate Bridge will require overnight closures of I-5 in one direction each night July 13-16:
- Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14: Southbound I-5 and SR 14 exit to southbound I-5 closed 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
- Wednesday, July, 15, and Thursday, July 16: Northbound I-5 closed 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Work under the bridge was completed by barge from the river. The top side of the bridge requires crews and equipment on the roadway, and raising the lifts, so these inspection and maintenance activities are being done at night.
Detour:
Interstate 205.
