Burnside Bridge Test Shaft Successful

A test of the soil for the foundation of the new Burnside Bridge turned out better than expected.

The bridge is being built to withstand a major earthquake.

A ten-foot-wide and 125-foot-deep shaft was dug and tested with equipment that applies massive pressure to see how the soil holds up.

They will be able to build the foundation of the new bridge with supports the same width and depth of the test shaft.

The project remains in the design phase. It's been delayed a year, because of federal funding uncertainties.
