Postal workers across the country, including in Portland, held demonstrations Tuesday to protest changes at the Postal Service.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has a ten year plan to make the Postal Service profitable. He says it's on track to lose $300 billion dollars.
The Oregon Postal Service Workers Union says DeJoy’s plan includes “Regional Transportation Optimization," which will slow the mail for two-thirds of the zip codes in the country.
They say in Oregon a pilot program that started in February has slowed the mail by one day in half the zip codes.
Now, starting in January, all zip codes outside the Portland Metro area, any post office more than 50 miles from Portland Regional Processing and Distribution Center by the airport, will lose their evening mail pick-up.
Oregon's Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have joined 20 Senators in calling on DeJoy to stop any changes that will result in job losses and further degrade mail delivery performance across the network.
DeJoy says the changes are necessary to keep the Postal Service in operation.
