TriMet Prepares For New Drug Laws

Two new drug laws will improve safety on TriMet buses and trains.

Starting September 1st, a new law takes effect that bans illegal drug use in public.

TriMet officers will be able to cite individuals for drug possession which will allow them to take part in a deflection program or be punishable by up to six months in jail.

Another law takes effect January 1st that focuses specifically on public transportation. Using drugs on a bus or train will qualify as a Class A misdemeanor that can lead to a one year jail sentence.
