A water and sewer upgrade project is prompting the closure of most of Blue Lake Regional Park from September 5 until spring 2024. The disc golf course will remain open during the closure period, though parking will be limited.
Metro invites people interested in the park’s future to a family play day and information session being held at the park on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The water and sewer project is part of a larger plan to renovate the much-loved park. Already, old and outdated structures have been removed, and the water lines running to and from the park have been replaced and connected with the City of Fairview’s municipal water system. Additionally, a maintenance facility serving Metro’s entire park system is being renovated. During the closure period, the park’s fishing pier will also be refurbished and improved with ADA accessibility features.
This work is made possible with funding from the voter-approved 2019 parks and nature bond.
“Metro has never closed an existing park for so long before, so this was a really big decision for us,” said senior capital projects manager Brent Shelby, who is overseeing the work. “It speaks to the scope of the work we’re doing. Some of the park’s water and sewer lines are more than 50 years old, and they run through much of the park. When we’re done, we’ll have a system that will provide a foundation for a renovated park that can welcome many future generations of visitors.”

About the family play day and information session
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, Metro is partnering with PlayEast to host games, crafts, and giveaways at Blue Lake Regional Park. Attendees can participate in family-friendly activities and visit with Metro staff to learn more about future park renovations and to share thoughts and ideas. This is a "drop-in" event; guests do not need to attend the entire event to participate.
