Will Obama Obey 14-Day Quarantine Rule Once Back in DC?

Funeral Held For Rep. John Lewis At Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church

Buck Sexton, the host of “The Buck Sexton Show,” took to Twitter on Thursday to ask if former President Barack Obama and the dozens of members of Congress who attended Rep. John Lewis’ funeral in Atlanta will have to abide by Washington, D.C.’s mandatory 14-day quarantine order for those who travel to a "high-risk" state.

“Georgia is on Washington DC Mayor Bowser’s list of states that require 2 week mandatory quarantine," Sexton wrote. "Are these politicians going into quarantine, or are rules just for the little people?”

According to a post from the mayor’s office dated July 24, 2020, travelers in the city are expected to adhere to the 14-day quarantine after they visit areas determined to be “high-risk” for coronavirus transmission. The move is aimed to“mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the District and protect the health, safety, and welfare of District residents, and will help return us to a downward trajectory of new cases.”

There are 27 states on the list. The quarantine involves those who took trips that were deemed “non-essential.” These trips include traveling to worship and to pick up education materials.

These travelers are expected to stay at “their residence or in a hotel room, leaving only for essential medical appointments or treatment or to obtain food and other essential goods when the delivery of food or other essential goods to their residence or hotel is not feasible.”

NBC Washington reported that anyone who disobeys the city’s order could be subject to a $5,000 fine and face up to 90 days in jail.

Bowser announced Thursday that schools in the city will be all-virtual in the fall due to the continued spread of the disease. NBC Washington pointed out that there have been more than 12,000 positive cases in the city and 584 residents there have died.

The Washington Post on Wednesday was quick to point out that Tommy Tuberville, an Alabama GOP Senate candidate, defied orders in the city and held face-to-face meetings there earlier this week.

Helen Kalla, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, lashed out at Tuberville.

“Just like when he opposed the statewide mask order from Alabama’s Republican governor, Tommy Tuberville is ignoring medical experts because he’s more focused on raising campaign cash in Washington than doing what’s right,” she wrote.

It will be interesting to see if she will be as swift to issue a response to the politicians who attended Lewis’ funeral that Obama seemed to try to turn into a campaign stop after his constant criticism of President Trump.
