Man Shot By His Own Gun At PDX

A man shot himself when confronted by a Port of Portland Police officer at Portland International Airport.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. Friday when a Port police officer contacted a man in the baggage claim area. Police Chief Jason Wallis says the man pulled a gun and there was a struggle. During the struggle, a shot was fired from the suspect's gun and the man was wounded. He was taken to a hospital for a non-life threatening injury.

The officer wasn't wounded by the gunfire, but did have a minor injury.

The East County Major Crimes Team is investigating this incident in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. The firearm believed to be involved has been recovered.

No flights at PDX were affected.

Police have not said why the officer contact the man.
