A plane crashed about five miles Southeast of Salem Tuesday afternoon.
73-year-old Eugene Mitchell, of Portland, was flying from Albany to Aurora when his plane had mechanical problems and then caught fire in flight.
Mitchell landed in a field and got out of the plane by himself before it was consumed by the fire.
Mitchell was treated at a hospital and released. He's a military veteran with flying experience dating back to the Vietnam War.
The NTSB will investigate the cause of the crash.
