Fire Damages Rock Creek Apartment

Several cats died in a fire on Friday that damaged an apartment complex in Rock Creek.

The apartments are located in the 18700 block of Northwest Rock Creek Circle.

The 911 caller stated there was a fire in the kitchen and it was growing quickly. With the reported information the fire was upgraded to a first alarm, bringing additional resources to the scene.

The first-arriving unit arrived four minutes after the 911 call came in. Firefighters were faced with heavy smoke conditions in the involved apartment unit. The first arriving engine was able to quickly locate and extinguish the main body of fire. The actions of that first engine company helped prevent rapid fire growth to other units. A search of the fire unit was clear of human fire victims, however multiple cats were found deceased. The fire was deemed under control at 4:53 p.m.

Fire crews were able to rescue multiple dogs from the two units that adjoined the fire unit.

The fire caused extensive damage to the involved fire unit and smoke damage to two others. Three occupants have been displaced because of the fire. No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators have determined the cause to be accidental. The fire started in the kitchen on the stovetop with hot oil. The damage value is unknown.
