Man Accused Of Bias Crime In Downtown Portland

Portland Police officers who were patrolling in downtown Portland heard sounds of a disturbance in the area of Southwest 10th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street. They responded and encountered a woman walking away from a Portland Streetcar while a man ran after her yelling racial slurs. The victim is African American.

The officers separated them and conducted an investigation. They learned that the disturbance started on the streetcar. The officers consulted with Bias Crimes detectives, interviewed the victim, suspect, and witnesses. The officers ultimately arrested 39-year-old Ian Edward Schmidt and booked him at the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Menacing and Intimidation in the Second Degree.
