Security Guard Arrested In Portland Racial Attack

A security guard has been arrested accused of a racially charged attack in Portland.

Portland detectives say 37-year-old Nathan Scates confronted several people who were on a public dock on the Willamette River near Southwest Hrbor Way in August while he was on duty.

Police say Scates made racial slurs to a Muslim and Hispanic family, then assaulted a Hispanic woman with his Asp baton, injuring her hand.

People at the scene called 911 and followed Scates as he tried to leave. Scates then used pepper spray on two other people and took off.

After a lengthy investigation, he was later identified and is facing several charges, including Assault and Intimidation.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing the case.

Scates is set to make his first court appearance in the Justice Center at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
