Fatal Logging Accident Near Alsea

A logging accident killed one man an injured another Friday morning near the town of Alsea.

They were working for Wiest Logging at a site on Lobster Valley Road around 8:40 a.m. when a log rolled down a hill and hit two men.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

An air ambulance was requested, but wasn't able to fly due to bad weather.

27-year-old Hector Rodarte, from Monmouth, was killed.

29-year-old Ricky Payton, of Independence, was hoisted out of a steep ravine by first responders and transported to Good Sam Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.

Corvallis Mountain Rescue, Corvallis Fire Department, Alsea Rural Fire, Weist Logging Employees and Benton County Sheriff's Office Deputies assisted in the rescue.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
