A man from Virginia who was free climbing at Smith Rock State Park fell 150 feet on Sunday.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office says 21-year-old Benjamin Schulman was climbing a route that's not typically used by climbers and he wasn't using any climbing gear.
Schulman fell 150 feet and rolled another 100 feet before coming to a rest.
Sheriff's deputies and Redmond Fire Medics gave Schulman medical treatment until Deschutes County Search and Rescue personnel arrived to assist with the hillside evacuation. This process took over two hours because of Schulman's location and injuries.
Schulman's climbing experience is unknown. However, he was camping nearby with other climbers familiar with the park.
Rescue personnel extracted Schulman from the hillside and carried him to a nearby meadow where an AirLink helicopter was waiting. He was flown to St. Charles Health System – Bend for advanced care of his life-threatening injuries.
