New Distracted Driving Research

New AAA research shows certain vehicle infotainment systems are less distracting for drivers than others.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found Apple CarPlay and Google's Android Auto are less distracting to drivers when compared to built-in vehicle infotainment systems designed by auto makers.

Marie Dodds, with AAA Oregon/Idaho, says CarPlay and Android Auto were 5 seconds faster on average than the vehicles built-in system when making a call and 15 seconds faster when programming navigation.

Dodds says the difference is critical because if you take your eyes off the road for more than 2 seconds, it doubles your risk of getting in a crash.

Dodds says these findings indicate that popular infotainment systems can be designed in a way that is less distracting.

Distracted driving is responsible for over 390,000 injuries and 3,500 deaths each year.

AAA is sharing this new research with automakers and system designers to make infotainment systems less distracting.
