Fire crews are fighting a wildfire that broke out near the town of Rufus, east of the Dalles, in the Columbia River Gorge Monday night.

The wildfire started shortly after 9 p.m. and an evacuation order was in effect within 10 minutes. Evacuation orders were lifted overnight.

Crews from seven different agencies are battling the fire. Officials say the community came together and used garden hoses and sprinklers to protect homes and helped evacuate elderly residents.

Firefighters hope to have the wildfire 90% contained by Tuesday afternoon.

Officials are working on learning how many acres burned and what started the fire.
