I-84 Eastbound Opens Through Gorge

I-84 Eastbound through the Columbia River Gorge opened Saturday afternoon.

It had been closed for 19 days due to damage caused by the Eagle Creek fire.

More than 3,400 damaged trees had to be removed and hillsides had to be made safe from loose rocks and other debris.

One section of the freeway, near milepost 52, has the eastbound lanes transfer to the westbound lanes, because the hillside remains too dangerous.

ODOT says the possibility of erosion and debris flows this winter, because of the fire, could lead to more slides.
