The Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that the O'Bryant Square SmartPark Garage will be closed temporarily for at least four months starting Monday, Sept. 4, to address safety concerns.
Located at 808 SW Stark St, the garage provides 100 underground vehicle parking spaces that give access to area businesses and other destinations in the West End area of downtown. The garage is located underneath O'Bryant Square Park.
During a recent scheduled repair project to seal some cracks and stop leaking from the park above, PBOT discovered additional spalling concrete damage. Based on the advice of structural engineers, the bureau has decided to temporarily close the garage.
O'Bryant Square Park remains open. There is not believed to be any risk to users of the park.
PBOT is hiring an engineering firm to assess the structure and advise on long-term options for repairs that are required to make it safe. That report may be completed by the end of the year. After reviewing the report, PBOT will consider improvements that would be appropriate to provide public access.
