Thursday morning, crews from Clackamas Fire District were dispatched to a technical rope rescue in the area of Promontory Park in Oregon City.
A report of a missing person was filed Thursday morning with Canby Police Department and was then relayed to Oregon City Police Department, the last known location of the reported individual.
A friend of a recreational climber reported the climber missing and drove to Promontory park to try and locate the friend at his last known location. He found the climber's vehicle at Promontory park and hiked down to a known climbing area where the climber in question was found unconscious.
Oregon City Police Department also responded to the incident and led Clackamas Fire crews to the area. On arrival Clackamas Fire crews pronounced the climber deceased and moved the incident from a rescue to a recovery.
The climber was found hanging from his rope system approximately thirty feet up the face of a rock wall. He was apparently hit by a large rock that fell from above the climber. It is not known if the climber was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
Firefighters say rocks frequently fall from the cliff and it’s not a safe place to climb.
