A truck carrying recycled cooking oil caused a greasy spill on I-5 southbound in North Portland.
It happened near Killingsworth Street Tuesday morning. Dave Thompson with Oregon Department of Transportation, says the truck broke the valve off, leaving a four inch hole in the tank and about two thousand gallons of cooking oil spilled on the road.
Thompson says they had to dump kitty litter on the spill, let it soak up, sweep it off, then lay down sand to make sure there's some good traction.
Some of the oil spilled into the sewer system, and crews had to suck it back out. They believe they got it all before it went too far into the system, but they will know for sure Wednesday.
Thompson says the clean-up has been messy and smelly beyond belief.
