Suspect Arrested After Violent Assault In Newberg

Monday morning at about 7:40 a.m. a caller reported that they had interrupted an assault in progress at the old SP Newsprint property on Wynooski Road just outside the City of Newberg. The business is currently vacant but being patrolled by private security.

After being discovered by the caller, the suspect fled the area. Responding law enforcement units were able to get the suspect's name from the victim, and he was identified as Matthew Nathaniel Lindsey, 26 years old of Newberg. It appears Lindsey was some type of acquaintance with the victim.

The adult victim, whose name is not being released, was taken to OHSU by helicopter for precautionary reasons. Her wounds do not appear to be life threatening. She is cooperating with the investigation. Police say the wounds the victim received appear to be from an edged blade, but they aren’t saying what type of blade.

A search was conducted by law enforcement from several different jurisdictions, including Clackamas County's air support helicopter, Ymahill  County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, and Beaverton Police and Newberg Police K-9 units. The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office was also assisted by the McMinnville Police Department and the Oregon State Police.

At about 12:50 p.m. a Newberg Police Officer located the suspect and took him into custody approximately a half-mile away in the 500 block of First Street in Newberg. At the time of this media release, the suspect is in the custody of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit and the investigation is continuing.
