Schnitzer Steel Fire Sends Plume Of Smoke Over City

Saturday around 5:30 pm, Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a commercial fire at Schnitzer Company, 12005 N Burgard Rd.

When fire crews arrived at the Schnitzer Steel metals recycling yard and port, they found a large pile of burning recycled material.

Due to the size of the fire, the proximity of a building and nearby bottles of flammable gases, PF&R called for additional resources. The 2nd alarm was called around 5:45 pm.

As fire crews began setting up the fire engines and trucks to control the fire, due to the size of the fire and the amount of recycled material, crews needed a large amount of additional water. PF&R's Fireboat Campbell was used to pump that needed water from the Willamette River.

Food and water were also needed to be brought to the location for the crews, due to the high heat and length of time it took to put this fire out.

The fire was under control around 8:00 pm. However, crews needed to stay at the location until 4:15 am this morning while working with Schnitzer employees to fully put out the burning material.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
