A rally at Portland’s Terry Schrunk Plaza by supporters of free speech and President Donald Trump drew two opposing rallies at City Hall and at Chapman Square.
During rallies, police tried to keep the groups separated. A few people from each side went into the opposing group’s rally to cause agitation. Police escorted them back to their original rally.
Police seized several weapons including brass knuckles, a knife, bottles, clubs, homemade shields and other improvised weapons.
Police say people began removing bricks from a building in Chapman Square and started throwing them at officers. Police fired flash bang devices and balls filled with pepper spray. Police closed Chapman Square and started making arrests. Police also closed Lownsdale Square.
Demonstrators marched to Southwest 4th and Morrison where an unknown substance was released into the air that caused people to start coughing. Police say they didn’t release the substance.
Police detained many people at the location and noted their personal information before releasing them.
Police arrested at least 14 people.
