Suspect Who Stole Back Pack Caught

George Tschaggeny

Portland Police say the man who stole a back pack from a victim of the deadly MAX stabbing has been caught.

When Rick Best was stabbed to death on a MAX train last Friday, someone stole his back pack.

Thursday night, Portland Police released surveillance photos and video of the suspect.

The backpack and wedding ring belonged to Rick Best. The contents of the backpack include personal items important to the Best family. It included a list of phone numbers Best kept in his wallet. They were numbers from friends in the Army.

Friday morning, Portland Police got a tip from a Domino's Pizza employee who had seen 51-year-old George Tscheggeny. Tscheggeny was arrested in a homeless camp under the Cesar Chavez overpass.

Police say they have video evidence of Tscheggeny removing the ring from Best's finger and stealing the back pack.

Tscheggeny will be charged on Monday with Theft, Tampering with Evidence and Abuse of a Corpse.
