It’s the start of the American Medical Response River Rescue Team’s 19th season this Memorial Day Weekend.
With temperatures expected to hit the 90s this holiday weekend, a lot of people will be hitting Portland area rivers to cool off. But the waters are still dangerous and cold.
Justine Kilby, AMR Portland lifeguard, says the wet winter caused a lot of snowpack and high water, which means fast currents and hidden drop-offs in the Clackamas River. Wearing a life jacket is strongly recommended on, in or near the water.
Before AMR’s River Rescue Program started in 1999, Glen Otto and High Rocks Parks claimed two to four lives each year.
AMR Portland says following these simple steps can save someone’s life:
-Wear a properly sized U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket when in and around water.
-Be aware and prepared for hazards before you go.
-Know your swimming abilities.
-Keep children within arm’s reach and provide constant supervision.
The experienced swiftwater lifeguards will staff Glenn Otto Park in Troutdale and High Rocks Park in Gladstone starting Saturday, May 26th.
