Sunday afternoon, East Precinct officers responded to the report of a person intentionally struck by a vehicle in the 100 Block of SE 97th Avenue.
Officers and medical personnel arrived on-scene and learned three persons were struck by a silver 2016 Chevrolet Impala. Two people received minor injuries. One man experienced serious, but non-life-threatening injuries; he was transported to an area hospital by ambulance. One person with minor injuries was transported to an area hospital by family and the other did not seek medical attention at the time of the investigation. Responding officers canvassed the area and located the suspect and his vehicle at the Chestnut Tree Inn, located at 9699 SE Stark St. Officers observed significant front-end damage to the vehicle.
During the investigation, officers learned from witnesses that the suspect had driven his vehicle through the neighborhood at a high rate of speed on multiple occasions during the evening. People standing on the west side of Southeast 97th Avenue requested the suspect slow down. Shortly after this occurred, the suspect drove his vehicle into the crowd, at which time, he struck three people in the group.
22-year-old Henry Nikila II was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Endangering (three counts), Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver -- Property Damage (three counts), Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver -- Injury (three counts), and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. Nikila will be arraigned Monday.
