Studded Tire Season Ends In Oregon and Washington

The clock is ticking for Oregon and Washington drivers to remove studded tires.

Oregon Department of Transportation says the deadline this year for both states is Friday, March 31st.

Studded tires are allowed in both states from November 1st through March 31st. ODOT says studded tire season will not be extended this year.

Drivers are encouraged to consider other types of traction tires or chains. Traction tires for use in severe snow conditions have an emblem on the tire sidewall of a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake in the center. ODOT says research shows these tires cause no more damage than standard all-weather tires and give better traction than studs when used on bare pavement.

These traction tires chains minimize damage to the roads caused by studded tires. A 2014 study revealed studs cause around $8.5 million in damage every year to state highways.
