Portland could become the next city to ban plastic drinking straws.

Mayor Ted Wheeler has proposed a resolution that'll be considered on Wednesday that would require the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability to develop a proposal by October to ban plastic straws.

An exception will be considered for patients who need to use straws in hospitals and for other medical purposes.

Seattle is among more than 10 cities that have banned plastic straws. Several states are also considering legislation to ban straws.

According to Mayor Wheeler's resolution, straws are among the top ten contributors to marine pollution and more than 663 marine species have been affected by plastic straws.
