Thursday May 11, 2017, at 8:02 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to the area of Southeast 60th Avenue and Nehalem Street on the report that a white pit bull was jumping at the door of a neighborhood residence after earlier chasing a woman who had to jump onto a truck to get away from the dog.
As officers were responding to the call additional information was received that the dog had attacked and bitten two people. As an officer arrived at the scene, the dog was attacking children at a bus stop and was biting a woman who was protecting her nine-year-old son and other children. As the officer approached the dog, it let go of the woman's leg and charged at the officer who fired a single shot striking and injuring the dog.
A male that was bitten on the shin by the dog was treated by medical personnel at the scene. The woman and her son did not suffer any injuries.
Multnomah County Animal Services responded and took custody of the dog.
Youth Services Division School Resource Officers are going to visit nearby Whitman Elementary School to check in with students who were waiting for the bus during this incident.
