Former President Jimmy Carter Celebrating 96th Birthday

October 1st marks a special day for former President Jimmy Carter as he turns 96. Carter is the longest living person to hold the title of President of the United States.

Carter has had health scares over the years, including a brain tumor and a series of falls. However, he was back with building homes for Habitat for Humanity and working with the Carter Center by the time he bounced back. He has also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as numerous Grammy awards.

Most recently, the 39th President has been angling his Carter Center to be a pool of resources leading up to the election. Last year, after being asked if he would ever run again, Carter jokingly remarked on the ages of Presidential candidates: “I hope there’s an age limit,” he said. “If I were just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I don’t believe I could undertake the duties I experienced when I was president.”

Carter plans to celebrate his 96th birthday with his wife of 74 years, Rosalynn, at their home in Plains, Georgia. Fans can send birthday greetings to Carter through the Carter Center’s website.
