Portland Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Saturday evening in downtown Portland.

Dueling demonstrations were underway when the shooting happened. Police have not said whether the shooting was related to the demonstrations. The groups involved supporters of President Trump who had rallied earlier at Clackamas Town Center and counter-demonstrators.

Portland Police say at 8:46 p.m. officers heard sounds of gunfire from the area of Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southwest Alder Street. They responded and located a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Medical responded and determined that the victim was deceased.

Homicide detectives are aware of videos circulating on social media that show the shooting. It is important for detectives get a full and accurate picture of what happened before, during, and after the shooting. If anyone was a witness, has video, or has information about the homicide, they're asked to contact the primary detectives.

"It is still early in this investigation, and I ask everyone to give the detectives time to do their important work before drawing conclusions about what took place," said Police Chief Chuck Lovell. "If anyone can provide information about this case, I ask them to please reach out to our detectives. This violence is completely unacceptable and we are working diligently to find and apprehend the individual or individuals responsible."
