Oregon Humane Society Gets Over 125 Kittens

Summer is in full swing, which means it’s also one of the busiest times of year for many shelters and rescues. Often called “kitten season,” unwanted litters of kittens can quickly fill shelters beyond capacity.

The Oregon Humane Society’s Second Chance program works with shelters throughout Oregon and around the region to help alleviate feline overcrowding during this critical season. This week alone, more than 125 kittens arrived at OHS with most coming from Second Chance partner shelters.

To help accommodate the busy summer months, large transports of kittens will arrive at OHS at the new Cat and Kitten Intake Center located near the main shelter. The first group of 53 kittens and cats arrived at the Center Friday afternoon from Willamette Humane Society, United Paws of Tillamook and Humane Society for SW Washington. Smaller groups of incoming kittens will still come through the main shelter.

“Using a separate building for our larger transports will allow us to help more kittens and cats and keep them as healthy as possible as they get ready for their forever home,” says Sharon Harmon, OHS President and CEO. Kittens will move from the intake building up to the main shelter as they are ready for adoption, and as space allows.

During this busy season, the public is encouraged to consider adopting a cat or kitten. “We are able to help thousands of cats and kittens each year because our compassionate community supports adoption,” added Harmon.

All adoptions include vaccines, spay/neuter, microchip, one month of pet insurance for Oregon residents, a health exam with a vet of your choosing and a coupon from Mud Bay.

OHS hours for viewing and meeting pets are 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday,. The shelter is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd., Portland, OR 97211. Directions here.
