Beavers lose heartbreaker in OT at UCLA 83-74

The Beavers and UCLA played an impressive 40 minutes of college basketball Monday night at Pauley Pavilion. The Beavers basically playing without two of their top players for the season are adjusting to life without Kennedy Brown and Taya Corosdale. Arguably, the duo are the top two rebounders on the team. Taylor Jones had a double double in this 83-74 overtime loss but was hounded by foul trouble all night long and was eventually fouled out by the officiating crew working the game.

The No. 15 Oregon State women's basketball team fell to No. 8 UCLA 83-74 in overtime Monday evening at Pauley Pavilion.

"This was an exciting game," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I really liked our effort, I was pleased with the way we bounced back from Friday's game at USC. Things are still in flux, as we figure out life without Kennedy (Brown). We have different people in different spots. I thought the way we prepared and the way we battled was really impressive. UCLA is a great basketball team, and they did what they needed to do to win."

The Beavers led for over 26 minutes of game time in the contest.

Mikayla Pivec had yet another big game, going for 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals before fouling out.Destiny Slocum scored 19 points and dished out four assists.

Taylor Jonestallied her ninth career double-double, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds, before fouling out in the overtime period.Jasmine Simmons vscored 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor.

Kat Tudor scored nine points, while Maddie Washington pulled down five rebounds.

Oregon State shot 50 percent in the game, compared to 39 percent for UCLA. The Beavers held a 43-40 advantage in rebounding.

The defenses controlled the early part of the game, as the Beavers took a 6-5 advantage into the first media timeout. The teams continued to trade punched throughout the first quarter with the Bruins heading to the second up 16-14.

Oregon State scored six unanswered points early in the second quarter to retake the advantage 20-18. The Beavers followed that up with an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead, on their way to a 31-26 halftime advantage.

OSU exploded out of the locker room, extending the lead to 14 three minutes into the third. UCLA surged back, cutting the edge to four with two minutes left in the period. The Bruins briefly leveled the score, before a Simmons 3-pointer put the Beavers ahead 56-53 going to the closing frame.

The two sides went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Oregon State going in front 64-62 at the final media break. The two sides were level at 67 with a minute left on the clock, and neither team was able to break the deadlock as the game headed to overtime.

The Bruins were able to take the game in the extra period.

The Beavers will face another ranked challenge on Friday, when they take on No. 4 Stanford at Maples Pavilion.
