Jonathan Smith talks Beavers and Letter of Intent Day!!

 

Jonathan Smith knows he has holes to fill in his second campaign as the head coach of Oregon State. The people who estimate the success of his current group of recruits are unsure about the newcomers but the coach is upbeat. Check out his news conference regarding the new group of players who will put on the Orange and Black.

AKILI ARNOLD

Position: Safety

Height/Weight: 6-0/185

Hometown: Lake Forest, Calif.

School: Mission Viejo

Head Coach: Chad Johnson

• Letter winner for head coach Chad Johnson.

• Rated three stars by both 247 Sports and Rivals.com.

• Ranked amongst the top 100 players in the state of California by 247Sports.

• Played in the January 2019 Polynesian Bowl.

• Teammate of Dec. 2018 signee Jojo Forest at Mission Viejo High School.

• Named the 2018 County Defensive Player of the Year by the Orange County Register. He was also named the Offensive Most Valuable Player in the South Coast League.

• Credited with 32 tackles his senior season, adding seven interceptions for 176 return yards and six pass deflections.

• Offensively, caught 53 passes for 870 yards and seven touchdowns. Also credited with 236 kick return yards and 143 punt return yards.

• Helped Mission Viejo to a 12-1 record as a junior in 2017.

• Made 25 tackles with two interceptions and two pass deflections.

• Offensively, ran the ball 157 times for 1,467 yards and 14 touchdowns. Finished with eight 100-yard games. 

• Is also a standout in track and field, competing in the 100 and the 4x100.

• Son of Sina and Junior Arnold.

• Has three brothers: Alijah, Easton, Jett.

DYLAN BLACK

Position: Long Snapper

Height/Weight: 6-1/200

Hometown: Reno, Nev.

School: Bishop Manogue

Head Coach: Ernie Howren

• Letterwinner for head coach Ernie Howren.

• Part of a Bishop Manogue team that went 11-4 in 2018. 

• Also played left guard and linebacker during his high school career.

• All-state for academics.

• Born in Bend, Ore.

• Son of Shanon and Brett Black.

• Has one brother, Dustin.

• He Tweeted: "Oregon State just felt like home. The coaching staff is amazing, they made me feel like they really wanted me there. Another big factor was talking to their punter, Daniel Rodriguez . He was my host and was awesome."

• Chose Oregon State because "Everything about Oregon State welcomed me in. I felt like I was already at home. The coaches and players treated me like I was already on the team."

CADE BROWNHOLTZ

Position: Outside Linebacker

Height/Weight: 6-3/230

Hometown: Sacramento, Calif.

School: Jesuit

Head Coach: Marlon Blanton

• Letterwinner for head coach Marlon Blanton.

• Two-time first-team all-league selection.

• Credited with 50 tackles as a senior in 2018, adding 19.5 for loss. Tallied four sacks and added one interception.

• As a junior, in 2017, led Jesuit to a 10-3 mark.

• Finished with 57 tackles as a junior, posting five tackles for loss. Also had four sacks and one interception.

• Son of Heather and Scott Brownholtz.

• Has two brothers, Calvin and Cole. Calvin is a quarterback at UTEP and Cole is a QB at Incarnate Word.

• Father, Scott, played on the offensive line at Georgia.

• Intends to study business at Oregon State and would like to go into coaching after his playing career.

JACKSON CHRYST

Position: Quarterback

Height/Weight: 6-2/200

Hometown: Palo Alto, Calif.

School: Palo Alto

Head Coach: Nelson Gifford

• Letterwinner for head coach Nelson Gifford.

• Led Palo Alto High School to a 10-2 record as a senior in 2018. Palo Alto had posted four losing seasons prior to to 2018.

• Named the San Francisco Chronicle's Player of the Year for the Peninsula/South Bay in 2018. 

• Completed 150-of-272 passes attempted for 2,714 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior. 

• As a junior, played in nine games, throwing for 887 yards and eight touchdowns.

• Saw his QB rating rise from 37.9 as a sophomore to 74.2 as a junior, then finish at 128.4 his senior season.

• Son of Shelley and Geep Chryst.

• Father, Geep, has been with the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears as an assistant coach.

• Brother is former Stanford quaterback Kellen Chryst.

• Has one sister, Gillian.

• Born in San Diego, Calif.

JACKSON CLOYD

Position: Inside Linebacker

Height/Weight: 6-2/230

Hometown: Orange, Calif.

School: Orange Lutheran

Head Coach: JP Presley

• Letterwinner for head coach JP Presley.

• Named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Honoree in 2018.

• First-Team All-League as a senior in 2018. Named Second-Team All-County.

• Team captain.

• Led the Trinity League in tackles as both a junior and senior.

• As a senior, totaled 103 tackles, including 12 for loss. Added 6.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. Also tallied one interception and credited with three pass deflections.

• Earned the Orange Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Award.

• As a junior, in 2017, posted 101 tackles with five sacks. Also finished with two interceptions.

• Jacket of Honor football recipient.

• Has also lettered in baseball. Earned the "Lancer Award" for his play with baseball.

• Has volunteered with the Big Buddy Walk and Big Buddy Program, as well as the Carrington Charitable Foundation.

• Voted by the school administration to lead the Orange Lutheran HS OLU Ignite Program.

• Named Oregon 5A All-North Division on both the offensive and defensive lines as a senior.

• Intends to study civil engineering at Oregon State.

• Son of Tamara Szalewski and Dennis Ferenczi.

KADE HUSTLER

Position: Linebacker

Height/Weight: 6-3/245

Hometown: Portland, Ore.

School: Southridge

Head Coach: Kevin Bickler

• Letterwinner for head coach Kevin Bickler.

• Four-year starter for Southridge, playing on the offensive and defensive line, tight end and linebacker.

• Three-year all-league selection and has earned all-state at tight end and defensive line.

• Son of Tobie and Mike Hustler.

• Has one brother, Luke, and one sister, Sydney.

• Father, Mike, graduated from Oregon State.

• Cousin of Oregon State special teams coordinator Jake Cookus .

• Intends to study business at Oregon State.

• Has volunteered at a food bank in his hometown.

• Has also competed in basketball and track and field. Has placed in state in the shot put and discus.

• " I choose Oregon State because it feels like home and the community that surrounds the program will give me the best chance to succeed on the field and in the classroom."

• Southridge head coach Kevin Bickler on Kade -- "Kade was a four-year varsity starter for us at Southridge. He played offensive and defensive line his first three seasons and then moved to tight end and linebacker as a senior. This move to different positions his senior year shows the athleticism and versatility he has as a player. Kade is a beast in the weight room and his work ethic is like no other. He is a true football player and was born to play this game. He is the fiercest competitor I have ever coached and his will to win motivates him to play fast and fierce. He is physical and plays every play like it's his last. Kade is a tremendous football player, teammate and person and will represent Oregon State with class, character, and a winning attitude."

TANNER MILLER

Position: Offensive Guard

Height/Weight: 6-4/300

Hometown: Valencia, Calif.

School: Valencia

Head Coach: Larry Muir

• Letterwinner for head coach Larry Muir.

• Helped guide Valencia to a 7-4 record in 2018, a season after the program posted a 12-2 mark. Valencia has won 10 consecutive league titles.

• Named first-team all-league on offense in 2018 by the Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

• Named second-team all-Southern Section.

• Also earned Foothill League Lineman of the Year honors during his career.

• Part of an offensive line that helped Valencia gain 4,000 yards of total offense over 11 games.

• Intends to major in business at Oregon State.

• Son of Heather and Steve Miller.

• Has one sister, Peyton.

• Has four years to play three.

• Played one season for Garrett Campbell at Fullerton College.

• Credited with 32 tackles in 10 games for Fullerton as a freshman in 2018. Added 14.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

• Named second-team all-conference.

• Also forced two fumbles and had a pass breakup.

• Totaled a season-high eight tackles with three sacks against Riverside on Sept. 8, 2018.

• Played on the offensive and defensive lines while at Mira Costa for head coach Don Morrow.

School: Crescent Valley

• Ranked amongst the top-20 players in the state of Oregon by 247Sports.

• In three seasons at Crescent Valley, Sanders caught 55 passes for 790 yards and eight touchdowns.

• He also ran the ball 303 times for 1,456 yards and 17 touchdowns.
