The KEX Kids Fund began in 1987 for a very simple reason. teachers in the greater Portland area told us they had students who couldn't see or hear well, and whose families couldn't afford needed eyeglasses or hearing aids.
We've been meeting that need ever since. With the enthusiastic financial support of KEX radio listeners, thousands of children in 16 counties in Oregon and Southwest Washington have helped. In many cases, children who previously couldn't keep up with classmates saw immediate improvement after being given the means to see or hear clearly.
The process is also simple. Any child who is on the free or reduced fee lunch program qualifies for help from the KEX Kids Fund. Once children are directed to us by their school nurse or counselor, an amazing network of providers - 100 optometrists and 7 regional hearing programs - takes over.
Working at greatly reduced costs, our professionals provide examinations, the needed glasses or hearing aids, and continuing care. We are able to supply a pair of glasses for only $125, a hearing aid for $400, and within a matter of only days, kids have what they need to thrive in school in life.
We operate with little overhead, and most funding comes from a Thanksgiving time "radiothon," when KEX listeners pledge their financial support. For countless families and businesses, it has become an annual tradition and the perfect start to the holidays - a time to give back. We also receive financial support from various foundations and fundraising events, such as the annual KEX Kids Fund Golf Tournament each Spring.
The number of children in need continues to grow, and that's where you come in. Please consider becoming a Kids Fund "friend" by using the enclosed form to make a donation.
