Here’s What You Should Know About the Nazi Trying to Run as a Republican in Illinois

What’s going on?

Arthur J. Jones, 70, is the only candidate running in the Republican primary ahead of an election for the 3rd Congressional District Seat in Illinois. A self-identified Nazi, Jones denies the Holocaust and says he doesn’t “believe in equality – period.”

Give me some of the details:

  • Jones is a former member of the American National Socialist Workers Party.
  • In 2016, he ran unopposed on the Republican ballot but was removed by the party for violating election code.
  • He told the Chicago Tribune that his slogan was the “White People’s Candidate” when he ran for Milwaukee mayor in 1976 and that he wore Nazi regalia to march in the 1970s.

Will he represent Republicans in the general election?

Yes and no. Jones is poised to be the only Republican candidate in the election, but his candidacy has been firmly opposed by Illinois Republican leaders.

The Far-Right Movement Is Reviving in a Big Way — Here’s Why It Matters to You

“The Illinois Republican Party and our country have no place for Nazis like Arthur Jones,” Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider said in a statement quoted by the Chicago Tribune. “We strongly oppose his racist views and his candidacy for any public office, including the 3rd Congressional District.”

Glenn’s take:

The headlines are true: A Nazi is trying to run as a Republican. But Jones and his ilk do not represent the Republican Party or conservative ideals.

“Arthur Jones is an unashamed racist,” Glenn said. “Anyone with an ounce of common sense can easily see that this guy is a nobody and a nut job.”
