The Clever Buoy is already being used at several locations around the world to provide advance warning of sharks.
Orange County, California will test the buoys following a recent attack of a teenager who was severely injured near San Diego.
The Clever Buoy will be tested at Balboa Pier.
The buoy, which is made by Smart Marine Systems, scans the water for movement. When it detects a movement similar to a shark it sends a signal to a satellite which is then sent to lifeguards to alert swimmers.
The buoy is tethered to the ocean floor and charges with solar power.
Smart Marine Systems is based in Australia.
