2021 Boston Marathon Date Set If Approved To Take Place

A date has been set for the 2021 Boston Marathon if its allowed to take place.

The Boston Athletic Association announced the annual event is scheduled to be held on Columbus Day, Monday, October 11, if Massachusetts reaches Phase 4 of its COVID-19 reopening plan, permitting most of the public is fully vaccinated, CBS Boston reports.

The B.A.A. said additional details, including the size of the field, registration dates, safety measures and protocols and requirements for participants, will be addressed at a later date. The proposal must also be approved by the eight cities and towns that are part of the marathon route, which extends from Hopkinton to Boston.

“We announce the 2021 Boston Marathon date with a cautious optimism, understanding full well that we will continue to be guided by science and our continued collaborative work with local, city, state, and public health officials,” Tom Grilk, President and C.E.O. of the B.A.A., said in a statement obtained by CBS Boston. “If we are able to hold an in-person race in October, the safety of participants, volunteers, spectators, and community members will be paramount.”

The 2020 Boston Marathon was initially scheduled to take place in April and rescheduled for September at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, before eventually being cancelled as an in-person event as the pandemic continued.

The B.A.A. said more than 16,000 runners participated in a virtual race, which allowed participants to cover 26.2 miles in one continuous run during a 10-day window to earn a marathon medal and be recognized as an official finisher.

A virtual race option will also be offered in fall 2021 and more information will be provided at a later date, the B.A.A. confirmed on Tuesday.
