GOES-S To Bring Better Forecasting

The GOES-S weather satellite is expected to be launched Thursday.

It'll go into orbit over the western U.S., but it'll also cover the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to New Zealand.

It'll improve weather forecasting and also detection of wildfires.

The satellite has cameras that take photographs in more detail, but it also includes a device to detect the location of lightning strikes.

It'll take several months to calibrate and should be ready for service this fall.
