The Boy Scouts of America says girls will soon be allowed to become Cub Scouts and to earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, the organization's highest honor. The scouting board of directors voted unanimously this week to make the historic change.
Chief Executive of the Boy Scouts Michael Surbaugh said today that he hoped the change would "meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children." The organization has been primarily for boys, since its founding more than 100 years ago.
Starting next year, young girls will be able to join Cub Scout units known as dens. Dens will however remain single-gender -- all boys or all girls. A separate program for older girls will launch in 2019, enabling young women to earn the rank of eagle scout. In a statement, the organization said the move reflects the "changing nature of American life."
Many people are not happy with the decision. "Boy Scouts" quickly became a trending topic on Twitter and most of the tweets were not in favor of the new policy:
The boy scouts may out do the NFL in destroying their organization. All part of the comme plan. Leader of scouts is CFR— End Usury (@end_usury) October 11, 2017

I will NOT be having my kids join the "Boy Scouts" with girls. This is extremely problematic to underage boys exploring their homosexuality.— Pheep2049™ (@OfficialPheep) October 11, 2017
Girls in Boy Scouts? Social justice is getting out of hand. #BoyScouts— HONEST ABE INCOLN (@HonestAbeInkin) October 11, 2017
