Sunday night, Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies were called to a house along Highway 213 north of Molalla for a domestic violence assault.

The woman was able to escape the house with her children.

36-year-old Shane Griffin remained inside and despite several hours of negotiations he refused to come out.

When SWAT arrived shots were fired and Griffin was hit.  Medics were on the scene, but they weren't able to save him.

It's unknown whether Griffin died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.  An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
